Saxophone Instructor 

Lily Kaufman is a freelance saxophonist, composer, collaborator and educator. She has given several world premiere performances of contemporary chamber music, free jazz, unaccompanied saxophone pieces and music for saxophone and electronics throughout the United States and Canada. Her performances were featured at numerous festivals, conferences and residencies such as the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, the New England Saxophone Festival, the Fresh Inc Festival and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Artist-in-Residence program.

 

She has also performed from the standard classical repertoire and has given solo recitals at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in NYC, The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, CA and Golden Rondelle Theater in Racine, WI. As an orchestral saxophonist, she has performed in significant concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA, Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, TN and Nichols Concert Hall at the Music Institute of Chicago. She was a winner of the Temple Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed the Concertino Da Camera by Jaques Ibert under the baton of Maestro Luis Biava, former assistant conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra. She was also a winner of the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra Collegiate Division Concerto Competition and a finalist of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

 

She received her bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Saxophone Performance and her master’s degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she was the Saxophone Teaching Assistant for two years. Her approach to teaching includes methods from the Alexander Technique and approaching the instrument with good posture and minimal tension in the body. With an emphasis on saxophone fundamentals, she believes these are the necessary components to produce a beautiful sound with fluid musicality across genres.
